About Me
Sandra Flores-Strand, Mezzo-Soprano and Librettist, is based in the US and Canada.
A San Diego native, Sandra is compelled to write with a focus on marginalized communities, particularly Latin American representation on stage, including the ongoing migrant crisis, a subject that hits close to home.
She recently performed with Mercury Opera, Voices of Vienna, the Phoenix Opera Orchestra, Brott Opera Festival, Red River Lyric Opera, and the Harrower Opera Workshop, among others. Sandra frequently performs with Phoenix Opera, and previously appeared as a Studio Artist at Angels Vocal Art in Los Angeles. She has been involved in professional theatre from a young age, working with Starlight Opera, the Asian American Repertory Theater, Lamb’s Players Theatre, the Old Globe, and the Lyceum Theater in San Diego. Sandra also performed with Lyric Opera San Diego, and the Royal College of Music: London in Provence, France, Flagstaff in Fidenza, Italy, as well as with Flagstaff Light Opera Company.

- Sandra was awarded a Research and Development Grant through the Arizona Commission on the Arts. She will be using the funds to write a children's opera about the Sonoran Desert. azarts.gov/news/30-arizona-artists-awarded-research-development-grants/
- Sandra is currently collaborating with composer Laura Jobin-Acosta, a recipient of the Opera America IDEA Residency, for an opera about Doña Felisa Rincón de Gautier, Puerto Rico's first female mayor. This piece that will have its premiere workshop at Opera America on May 7, 2022.
